Four Mistakes on Your Website (that are costing you leads)
It’s no secret that we’re a little obsessed with gorgeous website design. We spend hours upon hours outlining a robust customer journey for each of our clients and even more time perfecting every pixel on their website. To be totally honest with you — we comb through websites like it’s a hobby.
And over the years, we’ve seen quite a few mistakes that cost our clients thousands of dollars a year, and we don’t want that to happen to you (don’t tell the others, but you are one of our favs).
So today, we’re dropping four of the biggest mistakes we see on websites (often enough to make us a little sad on the inside), so you can give your site a mini audit and make sure you’re nailing it in these areas.
As you read through, keep a mental tally of the BIG four, so the next time you edit your website, you can make a few simple tweaks and finally stop losing potential customers.
01
You are not being intentional with your copy.
Good copy talks directly to your ideal customer. Let us repeat that for those in the back…
good copy speaks directly to your ideal customer.
What does that mean, exactly? It means that when your ideal customer lands on your website, all of those words they are reading are talking to them exactly where they are in terms of the problem you are solving for them in your business.
If your ideal client lands on the homepage of your website and you don’t have a big, bold line that says, “We will help you solve X problem,” then you are likely going to lose them.
We see many businesses using that homepage area to explain how amazing their brand is, but guess what? Most copy on your website shouldn’t even actually talk about your business at all.
It should focus on the people who you are solving and speak directly to them.
02
Your website pages don't lead your clients anywhere.
One of the biggest mistakes we see is that a lot of websites don't lead your visitors (aka potential customers) to take any action to work with you whatsoever. Your website acts as more of an information hub for working with your business but doesn’t give them easy actions to take so they can start the process of becoming a paying customer.
At the very least, you want to offer them something for free that is super relevant to what they are looking for. This could be a nice freebie or training where they enter their name and email (aka getting them into your email list) to get access to it.
Make sure that whatever it is you are offering them is actually useful and relevant to how you can help them with the problem they are trying to solve. This little action will be the very beginning of their relationship with you and with let them know they’re in good hands.
03
You are keeping your services too vague, so they don’t really know how you can help them.
Your services should say ONE thing and ONE thing only. Want to take a guess at what that is?
the problem you are solving.
It’s one detail we see missed on websites all of the time. Most of your visitors aren’t coming to your business to read about the features and benefits of what you are offering. They are coming to figure out if your business can help them solve a very specific problem they are dealing with at that moment in time.
When it comes to your services page, keep it simple. You don’t need to fluff up what you offer with adjectives (words like amazing, incredible, stunning, etc.).
Instead, try using stronger nouns & more colourful verbs that will resonate with those potential clients who need your help.
04
You are not setting yourself up as an expert.
If you want to be known for the services you offer, throwing up a static website (that you never update) isn't really enough anymore.
It's time to show up in your industry as the expert, which means that you offer a ton of value to your ideal customers.
This can be through regular blogs, social media (connected to your website), a freebie opt-in, or even a newsletter that recaps all of the above.
So, which mistake are you making?
The moment of truth! As you read through the post today, did you comb through your website and see a few of these mistakes? If so, we'd love to know which of these are losing you leads and customers.
